One of the seminal films of my teen years was National Lampoon's 'Vacation'. Not because it represented the zenith of cinematic achievement, but because it was a goofball 80s comedy, and to a 14 year old in 1983, that was waaaaaay cool!
A bonus to the on screen sillyness was that the film was bookended by two great songs by Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham. The upbeat (later to be cult classic) 'Holiday Road' accompanied the postcard opening credits, whilst the pseudo slowdancing beach tune 'Dancing Cross The U.S.A.' made you wait until the very end of the final credits to hit stop on the video.
Buckingham was in between Fleetwood Mac and solo projects at the time but his creative edge was as sharp as ever. Considering his key contribution to the commercial success of the most recognised incarnation of the Mac, it's surprising Buckingham himself didn't forge into the pop charts more than he did. But whilst 'Holiday Road' reached its final destination at #82 on the U.S. Billboard chart, Stevie's old flame did have a major hit single in late 1981 with 'Trouble' (U.S. #9 and Australian #1 for three weeks in February '82).
Here is a link that will take you to the YouTube clip for 'Trouble':
The song 'Holiday Road' in its original form is very difficult to obtain these days. But if you didn't find out long ago that it's a long way down a holiday road, check out Lindsey Buckingham's clip to take the trip:
Enjoy!!
